DOJA CAT – SCARLET (REVIEW) : THE ALBUM AGAINST THE DOGMA OF THE EXTREMISTS

Published by

I took the liberty of attributing the old album cover to the first singles released before she changed it. It really is my favorite version. But as the artist who sold it to her also sold it to others artists, she had to come up with a new cover, which I think is good too.

MY OPINION ON EACH INDIVIDUAL SONG & THE ALBUM AS A WHOLE

1. PAINT THE TOWN RED

The album opens with an effective, catchy track. It’s clear that SCARLET won’t be like its predecessors. Grandiose use of the Dionne Warwick sample.

09/10

2. DEMONS

Of all the singles released to date, this is my favorite by far. This production is incredible. It’s clearly the track I listen to when I’m feeling on edge, and it’s liberating.

10/10

3. WET VAGINA

I know a lot of listeners like this track, but I have to admit I’m not hooked. I do like the lyrics, though.

6.0/10

4. FUCK THE GIRLS

I LOVE IT! The chants, the flow, the lyrics. A rap song on a old school prod ! This track puts me right in the mood.

10/10

5. OUCHIES

It’s pure genius ! It’s so clean. It makes me want to attend a freestyle and Hip Hop contest. I’d be curious to see some one day.

10/10

6. 97

I love it when Doja takes on high, cartoonish vocals. It really adds something qualitative. And that beat ! Shall we talk about it ?

9.5/10

7. GUN

This track has the same vibe as Rosalia’s Hentai song. I’m just waiting for Tik Tok to see the potential in blending the two songs, and the trend will be set.

08/10

8. GO OFF

Fun and light. It’s interpreted a bit like a nursery rhyme, I think. The only track that could have been on Planet Her. Sandwiched between ‘ I Don’t Do Drugs ‘ and ‘ Love To Dream ‘.

8.5/10

9. SHUTCHO

The transition of the three tracks to follow is really superb. As for this track, I’m feeling a bit of M.I.A. influence on it, you do too ? Great song !

8.5/10

10. AGORA HILLS

Now we come to the heart of the album. 17 tracks is a lot, especially for an album without featuring. But she’s done a good job of selecting and arranging them so that the whole is well harmonized and easy to digest. Beautiful song. A fans favorite.

8.5/10

11. CAN’T WAIT

I really like it. I think it’s one of the most mature tracks on the album. It has a lot of potential. I’d love a video clip, somewhere between ‘ Attention ‘ and ‘ Agora Hills ‘. I think I’d enjoy it a lot more over time.

7.5/10

12. OFTEN

My favorite track on the whole album ! It’s now in my top five favorite Doja Cat songs. What an angelic voice she has when it comes to singing. We all thought of Solange when we heard it the first time, didn’t we ?

10/10

13. LOVE LIFE

I’ve got a vision ! A black and white video clip, with the camera zooming out on her face and behind her a panoramic view of her old neighborhood in Agoura Hills, witnessing a delightful moment of life between her family, her friends and loved ones.

9/10

14. SKULL AND BONES

Superb, bewitching, unique and moving. I unfortunately don’t have many rap references and maybe it’s just auditory hallucination, but for some reason this one reminds me of Drake ‘ From Time ‘ song.

10/10

15. ATTENTION

The more I listen to it, the more I love it. It really is one of my favorite songs by her. I hum it without even realizing it. The lyrics are powerful and the video has character. It’s pure caviar to my ears.

10/10

16. BALUT

I was astonished to discover that relatively few listeners enjoy this sixteenth track. And yet, it’s all there ! Listen carefully.

10/10

17. WYM FREESTYLE

I’m glad she ends the album on a rap note. She’s having fun and settling scores at the same time. I’m here for it !

9/10

SCARLET

SCARLET is not an album for arachnophobic people. By this I mean those who don’t like it when the artist objectively seeks to go against public’s expectations. I can’t criticize Doja Cat, as a listener who just discovered her with ‘ Moo ‘ or ‘ Say So ‘. I’ve been following her since 2015 or so. I discovered Purr a year or two after its release. ‘ Go To Town ‘ from the Amala album is in my Spotify Wrapped 2018 playlist. And I listened to the Hot Pink album on the day of its release, that is to say on November 7, 2019. As a result, Doja is far from an unknown in my Spotify playlists.

But I don’t know her intimately. However, for me, it’s undeniable that a woman with so many talents and who on top of all that pours her heart and soul into her projects, can only succeed. She’s one of the artists who indirectly and in no small way, pushes me in my creativity. The last time I was so excited and inspired by the releasing of an album, video or song, it was around my early 20’s.

For me, SCARLET is the masterpiece of her five musical projects. And although they’re all of a high quality, I have a non-negligible preference for this latest opus. Nothing is missing in it. There is strong lyrics, great melodies, joy, authenticity, references, beauty, epic visuals and a refreshing breeze of freedom. All of these form the main pillars of the album. The work is at once ethereal, powerful and concrete. What more could I ask for?
